Major Employers

Timmins is a resource-based economy, with mining as the key sector that drives local prosperity.  In the spring of 2006, a significant economic boom occurred, leading to significant investment across all sectors, particularly retail and mining.  Despite the recent downturn in the Canadian and global economies, companies like Lake Shore Gold Corp. and Detour Gold are moving ahead with projects that will results in the creation of hundreds of new jobs.

Our top four private sector employers are from the mining sector.  Three of these firms have international reach in the field of mining (Xstrata, Goldcorp, and Dumas) while Lake Shore Gold Corporation is a home-grown operation getting into the national and international scene.  Our top two public sector employers (City of Timmins and the Timmins & District Hospital) provide essential services to residents while other major employers ensure that our children receive the necessary education and training to continue making Timmins a great place to live, work, and play.
