Timmins is a cultural centre, and boasts six dance schools, as well as the renowned Timmins Symphony Orchestra. There are three community theatre groups that produce several plays each year and participate in regional drama festivals. There is an annual Porcupine Music Festival which showcases the talents of many of the community's youth.
The Timmins Museum is a multi purpose facility that highlights the art, heritage and traditions of the Porcupine Mining Camp, Northeastern Ontario and Canada in a variety of exhibits. The Timmins Museum includes a resource library as well as travelling displays on a mixture of national themes.
On the first Sunday of June of each year, Timmins hosts a Multicultural Festival at the McIntyre Arena, reflecting the unique ethnic diversity of people in Timmins. If you want to experience the excitement of different cultures, savour their cuisine and ethnic costumes, then you won't want to miss this festival. The festival brings together many different cultural groups from the City including Italian, Croatian, Polish, German, Scottish, Austrian, Finnish, Chinese, Filipino, Native Cultures, and more.
The Porcupine Art Club amplifies local art and culture by creating opportunities for northern artists to exhibit their talent at the Timmins Museum, the Timmins and District Hospital and at various store fronts. The Porcupine Art Club can be contacted at 264-5438.
The Timmins Film Society has been featuring distinctive films for the local community for more than 10 years. The films are viewed at the Timmins Cinema 6 every second Monday from September to June.
The Timmins Public Library, established in 1921, consists of the main library at 320 Second Avenue and the C.M. Shields branch library at 99 Bloor Avenue in South Porcupine. Services available to the public, at no charge, include membership,lending of books, magazines, videos, sound recordings on CD, language courses on cassette, large print and audio books, inter-library loans, Internet access and reference collection, government publications, local history and genealogy databases.
