Timmins Community Gardens Expansion
Thursday, April 28, 2011
TIMMINS, ON: The Timmins Community Gardens Project will expand thanks to an injection of $5,000 from Xstrata Copper Kidd Operations.
The Timmins Community Gardens is a volunteer project under the Timmins Family Health Team, Porcupine United Way, Timmins Economic Development Corporation, Mountjoy Independant Farmers Market, Mattagami Regional Conservation Authority, Anti-Hunger Coalition of Timmins, Porcupine Health Unit and community volunteers.
Riverview Park is the location of the first community gardens in Timmins. Community gardens are parcels of land divided into small plots to provide residents with access to fresh produce, support nutritional health, strengthen neighborhood connections, promote sustainability, and increase physical activity.
With much gratitude to Xstrata Copper, the Timmins Community Gardens will be able to expand up to an additional 43 plots. Community volunteers are needed to help develop the expansion.
Tom Semadeni, General Manager of Kidd Operations in Timmins, says "We are pleased to be able to move the expansion forward as this is a very community minded project which demonstrates significant community development for the city of Timmins."
The first 22 plots will be available for rent May 2st, 2011 through the TEDC for $20 based on first come first paid basis.
