TIMMINS, ON — In a gesture of support for the longstanding tradition of the 5-Pin Open Provincials, Mike Kentish, and Tiffany Thibeau representing the Municipal Accommodations Tax (MAT) Tourism Grant Committee, presented a generous $10,000 check from the MAT Tourism Fund. The check was received by Tim Gadd, President of the Northern Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association, and Darryll Belanger, President of Goldbelt, marking a significant milestone for the event’s continued success.

With a history spanning half a century, the 5-Pin Open Provincials has become a cornerstone of provincial-level bowling competitions, rotating among six different cities each year. This event not only showcases the competitive spirit of over 120 bowlers but also attracts a substantial number of guests, totaling around 40 individuals, who converge for a minimum of 4 to 5 days to partake in the festivities.

The funds provided will directly support the operational costs associated with hosting this prestigious event.

The Timmins Tigers Cricket Club is gearing up for an exciting 2023 Cricket Tournament season thanks to a generous $24,000 contribution from the MAT Tourism Grant Committee.

Cricket fever is spreading in Timmins as the city’s population becomes more diverse, with an influx of new residents from South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Cricket has become the favorite sport among these communities, and the upcoming tournaments this summer aim to celebrate their passion for the game.

The MAT Tourism Fund, administered by the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC), recognizes the importance of promoting tourism and supporting local initiatives. By investing in the Timmins Tigers’ tournament, the fund aims to attract visitors, boost the local economy, and showcase Timmins as a vibrant and culturally rich destination.

“We are thrilled to support the Timmins Tigers Cricket Team and their 2023 tournaments with visiting teams,” said Steven Viccajee, a member of the MAT Tourism Grant Committee. “Cricket is not just a sport but a unifying force that brings communities together. We can’t wait to witness the excitement and talent on display during the tournament,” he added.

The MAT Tourism Grant Committee is pleased to support the second annual Punjabi Cultural Festival in Timmins with a Check for $54,000. The cultural festival came to a close with a vibrant performance by renowned Bhangra performer, Jazzy B.

This year’s festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Sikh community through various traditional and contemporary performances. The event not only brought the community together but also fostered a deeper appreciation and understanding of Punjabi culture among the attendees.

“We are immensely grateful to the MAT Tourism Grant Committee for their generous support and recognition of our festival and community,” said Kanwaljit Bains. “This contribution will enable us to continue promoting our vibrant culture and heritage to a wider audience, fostering inclusivity and celebrating diversity within our city.” This significant financial boost from the MAT Tourism Grant Committee reinforces the festival’s significance and its positive impact on the local tourism industry.

After a break due to the pandemic, the Fred Rams Championship is back with a splash! Members from the MAT Tourism Fund Committee were poolside on Thursday afternoon to meet some of the excited participants and present a check to the Timmins Marlins Swim Club. The funds will be used to cover costs directly associated with hosting the event.

The championship took place on May 13 and 14, 2023 at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in Timmins, marking the culmination of the swim season for Ontario’s North East Region. Families from all over northeastern Ontario flocked to Timmins to enjoy the competition and everything else the city has to offer.

Close to two hundred young swimmers aged 14 and under participated in the event. The event creates opportunities for these talented young athletes to showcase their skills, compete against other clubs, and even set a personal best!

The influx of visitors to sports tourism events like the Fred Rams Championship benefit our local hospitality, retail, and service businesses, among others.

Members of the TEDC MAT Tourism Fund Committee were pleased to hand over a cheque to members of the Timmins Minor Hockey Association (TMHA) in support of the OHF U15AA Championship, which took place in Timmins from April 21 to April 23, 2023.

Steve Vachon, TMHA Coordinator, is grateful for the financial boost offered by the TEDC MAT Tourism Fund, and proud of Timmins’ reputation for being a top notch host. “Teams have boasted about our hospitality year after year. There is a ton of work that goes into the planning and execution of this tournament, which would not be possible without our amazing team of volunteers and funding partners” says Vachon.

Barrie Colts (OMHA) were crowned the 2023 OHF U15AA Champions and took home the trophy, beating out the other four teams: Mississauga Beast (GTHL),Timmins North Stars (NOHA), Soo Jr. Greyhounds (NOHA) and the London Jr. Knights (Alliance). The MAT Tourism Fund grant is used to cover costs directly associated with hosting the tournament which, along with eighty players and staff, brings approximately 465 visitors to Timmins over the weekend.

TIMMINS, ON — Tails (left) and Sonic (right) were on hand to accept a cheque from Mike Kentish (TEDC MAT Tourism Fund Committee Member) on Saturday April 15, 2023 at the McIntyre Community Building.

Sonic was disappointed to learn that the $55,000 cheque was not for him, but Mike was happy to explain how the funds go directly toward supporting the Northern Ontario Expo TimminsCon 2023. The annual event is designed to bring fun and pop culture to Timmins and attracted approximately 5,000 visitors over two days, including vendors and cosplayers from across Canada.

Northern Ontario Expo (NOE) is a local and incorporated not-for-profit, staffed entirely by an enthusiastic and committed team of volunteers. NOE has been working to bring cosplay to Timmins since 2013. Despite a small set-back over the last two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, TimminsCon 2023 has returned bigger and better than ever! Plans are already in place for a Timmins Expo 2023 (September 16 & 17, 2023) and TimminsCon 2024 (April 20 & 21, 2024 at the McIntyre Community Centre).

TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation’s (TEDC) MAT Tourism Fund Committee is pleased to grant the Timmins Ringette Association with $17,000.

The funds supported the organization with costs directly associated to hosting the 2023 Northeast Regional Ringette Championships in the City of Timmins on March 31 – April 2, 2023.
