Retirees: A Growing Work Force. Well-trained, Experienced & Capable

A Goldmine of Human Capital - Retirees

Have you considered post-retirement employment?

Individuals are entering reitrement in different ways. Many retirees are returning to work on a temporary basis. Some have not prepared for the retirement transition and find themselves unhappy, and the time long. Others just can’t stay away from work, some require the financial resources to supplement their income, or want mad money for those extra vacations; while, others require the intrinsic rewards (social and mental) in the work environment. At the same time, retirees are in a good position to re-enter the work force as they are retiring younger, many have post secondary credentials, offer valuable skills and experience, and they are relatively in good health and living longer.

Across the country, businesses are hiring older workers. While age is still a bias, it is becoming less of an issue. Employers need people in every walks of life to provide skills to help them grow and prosper. There are a growing number of workers aged 55 and older in the workforce. One-fifth of retirees between 1992 and 2002 have returned to work after their initial retirement with another 4% looking for work. (stats can 2002)

Currently in Timmins, there is no formal proceess for employers to find retirees to sign up and work for their company on a temporary basis. Employers need retired human capital to offset their labour shortage as well as helping grow the City of Timmins. Word of mouth is the usual way of finding retirees willing to share their skills.

The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is currently creating a database to identify retirees who wish to return to work on a part-time or full-time basis. This formal process of tapping into the resource of retirees will assist in bridging the knowledge and skills gap in the labour market. The registry of retired professionals, skilled trades and labourers will identify retirees through a registration format with a consent to disclose information to potential employers. A database will be maintained with contact information, trade qualification, professional certification and other specialties.

An employer can contact the TEDC to find suitable candidates for short-term, part-time or a full-time basis. In turn, the employer will contact the individual at their discretion and request further information, an interview or a resume.

The registry is a win- win situtation. Timmins has a goldmine of retired human capital.
Employers can tap into a “new” labour market on a “as need basis”. The retiree’s can choose a schedule to accommodate their retired lifestyle and contribute to the growth of the community.

Retirees have a wealth of experience and expertise. We hope they take this opportunity to register their information with the Timmins Economic Development Corporation Community Economic team by calling 360-2600 x 7099 or x 7080 or via e-mail to cathy.ellis@timmins.ca or brenda.camirand@timmins.ca.
